It introduces a compassionate, trauma-informed, evidence-based approach to managing substance use in primary care. Buprenorphine is a partial opioid agonist that works effectively as on opioid substitution treatment (OST). Buprenorphine is often combined with naloxone, which acts as a deterrent to illicit intravenous use. The product used most often in Ireland is Suboxone. Buprenorphine can be used as an alternative to methadone. There are some important differences between these medications, which will be detailed in the training module.

The Irish College of GPs, in conjunction with the HSE Inclusion Health Office, has developed a training video on overdose management. Drug-related deaths are an important and growing global public health issue.
