Overview

As part of an overall review of our education and to continue our ongoing commitment, the Irish College of GPs has updated LARC education for GPs and GP Trainees. LARC Education will address the latest evidence base to ensure that patient care for LARC consultations and insertions is based on the most up-to-date clinical guidelines.    

Advanced Certificate in LARC involves completing the LARC Theory Course and a LARC logbook under the supervision of an Irish College of GPs LARC Tutor 

LARC Training, Logbook and Application

For GPs and GP Trainees interested in completing further LARC training, the Advanced Certificate in LARC is available. Based on the identified learning needs, the LARC tutor and applicant will gather a list of the learning objectives and plan activities to meet these objectives. Initially, the applicant will observe the LARC tutor insert a LARC device, but as their competency level improves, the majority of the learning objectives can be achieved while supervising the trainee insert a LARC device. The Irish College of GPs checklist for inserting a device will be used as an aid and allow for standardisation.

Eligibility

Obtained Irish College of GPs Certificate in Contraception OR minimum three years’ experience post completion of GP Training providing contraceptive services and completion of Irish College of GPs Contraception Theory course

LARC Tutor

You must ensure that your Tutor is an Irish College of GPs-registered LARC Tutor by emailing womenshealth@icgp.ie before completing further training or initiating the training.

  • LARC theory course 
    Practical training and completion of the LARC logbook under a LARC Tutor

  • This course is open to GP members and GP Trainees. 
    This course is currently not open for non-members.

    • Obtained Irish College of GPs Certificate in Contraception OR minimum three years’ experience post completion of GP Training providing contraceptive services and completion of Irish College of GPs Contraception Theory course

    • Complete LARC Logbook under a LARC tutor

  • Members and GP trainees - Course access

  • The application fee is €80

  • Subdermal - A minimum of 6 entries needs to be made in the logbook dated in chronological order, and 2 consecutive entries signed off as Ready for Independent practice.

    IUCD - A minimum of 6 entries needs to be made in the logbook dated in chronological order, and 2 consecutive entries signed off as Ready for Independent practice.

    Subdermal and IUCD (Both) – A minimum of 2 entries in each section, dated in chronological order and 2 consecutive entries signed off as Ready for Independent practice

  • Any applications submitted as per the old process will not be accepted.

  • No, only the Irish College of GPs LARC Theory course is accepted.

  • The logbook can be signed off only by an Irish College of GPs active LARC Tutor.

  • Yes, A participant can have 2 tutors if required. As per the requirements, they need to be added under the Additional tutor section in the logbook. Please ensure details of both tutors are provided wherever necessary.

  • The LARC theory course is eligible for 1.5 Accredited CE Credits and 0.5 day GMS leave. The Advanced Certificate in LARC is not eligible for any credits.

    GPs who complete the Advanced Certificate in LARC logbook can self-record this under the Work-based Learning category using 1 hour activity = 1 credit as a guideline.
    You may record training sessions as you go or make one entry to represent all training in a given PCS year. You may attach your logbook as evidence or include the name of your tutor and dates of training in the textbox when recording.
