All applicants who are shortlisted will be invited to take the Scenario-Based Competency Assessment (SBCA). This is an online assessment comprising of 3 stations with simulated clinical scenarios which will be marked by an assessor.
The assessment must be completed in one sitting. Applicants are advised to allow approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes for the full verification and assessment process.
The assessment involves the following:
- In advance of the assessment: Undertake a mandatory systems check in advance of assessment day, on the same device and in the same location as on assessment day. Remember: a compatible device, robust internet connection and a quiet, uninterrupted space are your responsibility.
- Applicants that do not undertake the mandatory technical check will not be issued with a link to the live assessment.
- At the start of the assessment: There will be a 15-minute validation process to establish the identity of the assessment taker and check the suitability of the assessment environment, including a 360-degree scan of the room.
- Please have government ID card, passport or driver’s licence ready at start of test.
- During the assessment: Each station will have 1 minute reading time, 10 minutes assessment time and 3 minutes wait time until the next case (this is marking time for the assessor).

Declaration of Fitness to SBCA

Devices, ID and Room Checks

- I am aware that Tablets, Chromebooks and mobile phones are not compatible and cannot be used for the SBCA.
- My identification and room will be checked in advance of my SBCA commencing.
- I will be asked to hold my ID to the camera to be checked.
- I will be asked to show a 360° view of my room to demonstrate that I am alone and do not have additional devices or notes present
- I will be asked to screen share my desktop to ensure that there are no notes or apps open during the SBCA.
- I must satisfy the above criteria before my SBCA will be allowed to commence.
SBCA Misconduct

I understand that the SBCA misconduct regulations, as outlined below, will apply to my SBCA and that, should I breach the regulations, the listed penalties shall apply.
The Irish College of GPs expects that candidates will act in a professional manner at all times throughout the selection process, including at SBCA. Attempts to gain unfair advantage in the SBCA process and other unprofessional behaviour will not be tolerated and if detected may result in some or all the following:
- Disqualification from the SBCA process.
- Disqualification from future selection into Irish GP training.
- Reporting to the Irish Medical Council for unprofessional behaviour.
It is important that all candidates undertaking the SBCAs have an equal opportunity and attempts to undermine this will be taken extremely seriously. Prohibited behaviours include but are not limited to:
- Accessing notes or prompts, either in person or digitally, during SBCA.
- Using an additional device to gain unfair advantage.
- Having another person prompt you in person or via a remote device.
- Having another person take your SBCA on your behalf.
- Recording your SBCA via additional software on your device, and/or sharing an unauthorised recording of your SBCA or any part of it with any third party.
In this regard, we would draw your attention to the onerous obligations that may be triggered for candidates under data protection law where such unauthorised recordings contain personal data relating to persons other than the candidate himself or herself.
SBCA Day Protocol

- ICGP trainee selection SBCAs will be run via the Risr Assess platform. Responsibility for ensuring access to appropriate software, internet connection and a suitable room lies with the candidate.
- Candidates must present at the scheduled start time. Late commencements cannot be accommodated.
- Candidates must complete the Declaration of Fitness to undertake the 2027 GP trainee selection online SBCA in advance of the SBCA.
- Candidates must upload a copy of a valid ID in advance of their SBCA.
- Candidates must have ID on their person on the day of their SBCA to validate their identity.
- Candidates must show a 360° view of their SBCA space before the SBCA commences.
- Candidates must remain visible and on screen for the full duration of the SBCA.
- Candidates must not have any other apps or software running on their computer while undertaking the SBCA.
- Candidates will be required to screen share at the start of the SBCA to demonstrate that this is not the case.
- Candidates may not record the SBCA.
- The SBCA material is confidential and must not be shared with other candidates directly or indirectly.
- All stations will be undertaken using a simulated patient and one assessor.
- When you undertake the 2027 GP trainee selection SBCA, it will be necessary for us to process your personal data. We will only process such personal data to the extent that it is necessary for this purpose, and in accordance with our privacy policy.
