The Irish College of GPs Leadership Academy equips General Practitioners with leadership skills for a complex healthcare environment. The programme focuses on developing strategic, managerial, and communication skills, enhancing professional impact, and fostering a network of like-minded GP leaders.

Introduction

The Irish College of GPs Leadership Academy is a program designed to equip General Practitioners with the necessary leadership skills to succeed in the complex healthcare environment. The programme aims to empower GPs by providing them with the necessary tools, knowledge, and confidence to lead effectively within their practices and beyond. It recognises the growing challenges GPs face in balancing clinical responsibilities with practice management and team leadership.
The academy offers a collaborative learning environment, allowing participants to engage with peers, share leadership experiences, and explore real-world solutions to common challenges in general practice. Participation in the academy strengthens GP leadership capabilities and connects them with like-minded leaders.

Target Audience

This programme is designed for Irish College of GPs members, including:

  • Established General Practitioners: Experienced GPs seeking to refine their leadership skills and enhance their management capabilities.
  • Emerging GP Leaders: GPs preparing to take on leadership roles within their practices and the wider healthcare environment.

Fee: 2,000EUR

Registration Process
  1. Complete the Registration Form before Friday 31, July
  2. Application Review Once submitted, your registration will be reviewed by our team.
  3. Confirmation & Payment
    If your application is approved, you will receive a confirmation email on the 4th of August along with payment instructions. A secure payment link will be provided to complete the €2,000 contribution fee.

Note: The programme includes 12 sessions, delivered through a mix of in-person (at the College) and online formats. Dates will be announced shortly.

Additional Information

  • In addition to the direct contact time in each of the sessions, participants are expected to complete approximately 10 hours of independent work throughout the programme. This non-contact time includes:

    • Pre-Session Preparation: Reviewing materials and getting ready for upcoming sessions.
    • Post-Session Reflection: Consolidating learning and applying insights.
    • Business Strategy Development: A major ongoing assignment that begins early and is developed between sessions.

    Furthermore, there will be an optional mentorship engagement, which will include monthly check-ins to reflect on leadership challenges and progress.

    This structure ensures that learning is continuous and applied, with independent work playing a vital role in reinforcing and deepening the in-session content.

  • Participants are expected to maintain a minimum of 90% attendance for in-person sessions and at least 80% attendance for online sessions.

  • 15 Accredited CE credits and 3 days GMS study leave

    There is a CPDR code for this, which should be provided to participants on successful completion of the full course in April 2027 – this will generate a certificate of attendance in the ePortfolio.

    Participants can also be advised that they can self-record 10 hours of work-based learning to their ePortfolios for the preparation, reflection and work on the business plan – they are welcome to record this as they go.
