Irish College of GPs launches new GP Leadership Academy, with a Programme called “Empowering GPs: Leadership for the Future”.

The aim is to develop a network of GP leaders to drive change and shape the future of primary care in Ireland.

The Irish College of GPs is the professional body for general practice in Ireland, with over 4,400 members, and over 1,100 GPs in the 4-year training programme.

Today (May 21st), the College launches its new Leadership Academy, an exclusive initiative designed for members to empower GPs with leadership skills, strategic insights and confidence designed to drive positive changes within their practices, community and the wider healthcare system.

The Academy will teach leadership skills via expert-led sessions, both in person and online, with discussions and practical learning.

The Chair of the Board of the Irish College of GPs, Dr Deirdre Collins, said: “This is a really exciting initiative, and I am delighted to see it coming to fruition. GPs are leaders in their practices, but also in the community they serve. With this Academy, GPs can learn the vital skills to be innovators and change-makers, and help navigate the complex healthcare system, on behalf of their patients, but also on behalf of general practice.”

The CEO of the Irish College of GPs, Fintan Foy, said: “We envisage that this Academy will not only strengthen the leadership capabilities of GPs, but it will create a network of like-minded GP leaders who are committed to shaping the future of primary care in Ireland.”

The Programme was designed in partnership with consultants Crowe Ireland, Trinity College Dublin and Mason Hayes & Curran law firm.

The Programme will work with established GPs, and aspiring GPs, over a series of sessions covering leadership skills, practical examples, and guest speakers. Participants will deliver capstone projects, where they showcase leadership initiatives implemented within their practices, highlighting their growth and achievements. There will be a graduation ceremony and options for post-programme mentorship.

The first Programme begins in September 2025 and finishes in April 2026.
