Irish College of GPs AGM and Annual Conference 2025

The Irish College of GPs held its Annual Conference and Annual General Meeting in the Silver Springs Hotel in Cork on Friday, May 16, and Saturday, May 17 2025. The theme of the Conference was “Positive Leadership in General Practice.” 

At the AGM, the outgoing President Dr Pat Durcan welcomed Dr Nuala O’Connor as the incoming President, and Dr Velma Harkins as incoming vice-President. 

The Michael Boland Award was presented to Dr Annraoi Finnegan for his outstanding service in the promotion of Continuing Medical Education (CME) in general practice. This is an exceptional service award by the College to GPs who have made an outstanding contribution to the development of general practice in Ireland. 

The Gradam award, which is the highest honour by the Irish College of GPs for exceptional services, was presented to the former Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar for his service and contribution to Irish healthcare, particularly his leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic.  

The Gertrude Ronan Foundation Award was presented to Dr Andrée Rochfort for her consistent contribution to excellent general practice and her pioneering work in setting standards in doctors’ health and patient safety. 

Dr Rochfort, a GP in Wexford, has been the College representative at WONCA EQuiP since 2007, a founding member of the European Association for Physician Health, a founding member of the Sustainability Working Group of the College and a founding member of the Irish Society of Lifestyle Medicine. 

She was the Director of the Health in Practice Programme at the College and was later appointed Director of Quality Improvement, among other key roles. 

The Conference was attended by over 300 GPs from all over the country. 

There was a wide range of clinical sessions for GPs, including sessions on Adult ADHD, Polypharmacy and multimorbidity, Women’s Health, Dementia and Obesity.
