Constructive alignment ensures that what you learn, how you learn, and how you are assessed all work together towards the same goal; preparing you for safe, independent, fulfilling general practice. In this curriculum, each element is intentionally linked: the Professional Standards describe what you should be able to do; learning opportunities support the development of those skills, knowledge and behaviours; and assessments allow you to demonstrate your progress towards achieving them. Your learning journey as a GP trainee is progressive and cyclical:
Throughout this journey:
By keeping professional standard statements, activities, and assessments aligned, the curriculum provides a coherent, transparent, and supportive structure, ensuring that your growth as a GP is purposeful, measurable, and directly relevant to the realities of everyday practice.
This curriculum is designed as a guide and reference throughout your GP training journey. It is not intended to be read start to finish in one sitting, but rather to be used dynamically as your learning needs evolve. It is an attempt to capture the Professional Standards that you should exhibit at the end of your training. The aim is that the curriculum is easy to use and demonstrates clear constructive alignment throughout; guiding the learner through what is expected of them, where they can learn the necessary information and how this is examined by the college.
Above all, this is a document that we want you to return to often, apply it in context, and adapt its guidance to meet the needs of your patients, your practice, and your stage of professional development.
This curriculum can be used not only to guide the training of trainees but also to serve as a guide for continuing professional development (CPD) and lifelong learning. Its structure, Professional Standards Statements, and learning opportunities are intended to remain relevant beyond initial training, supporting General Practitioners as they progress through different stages of their careers. By encouraging reflection and engagement with evolving best practices, the curriculum promotes a culture of ongoing professional development. General Practitioners are encouraged to use it as a reference point for maintaining and enhancing their knowledge, skills, and professional values throughout their careers, ensuring that learning remains a continuous and integral part of professional practice.
We have made minor changes to the coding nomenclature in the updated curriculum. The mapping of the Professional Standards Statements to both WONCA Competencies and the Irish Medical Council Professional Standards is outlined in the mapping document. For coding purposes, each chapter will retain its existing code (from 2020 curriculum) - to ensure continuity between versions, followed by the number of the relevant standard statement.
