Saturday marked the Inaugural Irish College of GPs Medical Student and Intern Day, held in Hogan Place, the home of the Irish College of GPs. This event was designed for medical students and interns who want to learn more about the pathway to specialist training in general practice in Ireland. It was an opportunity for attendees to hear from practising, GPs, GP trainees, College staff and Programme Directors.
Welcoming attendees, Dr Velma Harkins, President of the Irish College of GPs said, ‘General Practice is, in many ways, the most complete form of medicine there is. It is the specialty of the whole person. As a GP, you will look after the same families for years, sometimes for generations. You will care for new babies, care for new mothers, and you will hold the hand of a patient at the end of their life. General Practice is also one of the most intellectually demanding specialties in medicine’
The programme for the day reflected the breadth of what General Practice can be. Attendees heard about rural practice, about practice in inner-city Dublin, about academic General Practice to a career in military medicine. ‘General Practice is not one thing. It can be shaped around the kind of doctor, and the kind of life, that you want to build,’ Dr Harkin continued.
Dr Knut Moe, Chair of the Board of the Irish College of GPs brought the day to a close and said that ‘General Practice is a specialty that asks a great deal of you and gives a great deal back. He thanked the speakers at the event who shared their experiences of General Practice and for sharing the different shapes a career in General Practice.
We particularly enjoyed meeting attendees in person but would also like to thank those who logged on, on a Saturday morning for their time and interest.
