GP Training Scheme Directors Workshop

Date: Friday 24 April 2026

Collaboration, shared learning, and a strong sense of purpose - these were the key themes from our recent all-island GP Training Scheme Directors educational event which took place in Cavan this week.

Speaking of about the workshop, Dr Cathy Cullen, National Director of Specialist Training in General Practice, highlighted “With over 120 participants from across the island, the session highlighted how closely aligned our training pathways and workforce challenges are. By bringing colleagues together from both jurisdictions, we created a valuable space to exchange ideas, share practical solutions, and learn from one another’s experiences”.

There was a real sense of positivity and commitment from Scheme Directors, who spoke about the impact of their work and their dedication to supporting the next generation of GPs. Their insights reinforced the importance of continued collaboration in strengthening GP training for the future. Dr Ciaran Foley, Assistant Scheme Director on the South East GP Training Scheme shared, “Seeing trainees go from first years to fourth years, to now colleagues. Its really nice to see that journey.”  Dr Brian Mc Morrow, Scheme Director on the Sligo GP Training Scheme, noted how he was “always interested in education” and this role gave him an opportunity to “get to know trainees” and “continuously upskill” himself. Dr Mc Morrow also highlighted that the workshop was a great occasion to meet other Scheme Directors and be “around so many inspiring people, there is so much creativity”.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to such an engaging and constructive event.
