Irish College of GPs in the News - ADHD, Menopause, Codeine & Families in Medicine

ADHD and Menopause

Between 80 and 90 per cent of adults diagnosed with ADHD also have another diagnosis, such as difficulties with sleeping or anxiety, delegates at our Annual Conference heard.

Dr Aoife O’Sullivan, clinical lead for mental health at the Irish College of General Practitioners, addressing the 350 doctors who attended the conference, added that ADHD rarely exists alone.

Dr Ciara McCarthy, the GP clinical lead for women’s health, said there has been an increase in demand for menopause care in recent years due to greater awareness and women being more comfortable seeking help.  “Menopause symptoms have an impact on quality of life for women, and they are becoming more proactive about seeking out help,” she said.

Codeine

An increasing number of people are presenting to treatment services addicted to codeine products that can be obtained over-the-counter.

Speaking in a session on Opioids and Opioid Use Disorder, Dr Bernard Kenny, Director of Addiction Management in Primary Care with the Irish College of GPs, shared his perspectives with the 350 doctors who attended the conference.

Families in Medicine

Medicine often runs in families!  We were delighted to see this article in the Irish Times sharing Dr Bríd Shanahan’s story.

Brid is the winner of the Dr Gertrude Ronan Foundation Award, 2026 and a fourth-generation doctor.

Originally from Kerry and practicing in Summerhill in Dublin, her great-grandfather, grandfather and father all worked in the medical field.

Behind the science, there are amazing personal stories of the generations of men and women working in healthcare in Ireland.

As we head towards exam time for budding GPs of the future, the stories of these doctors are a source of inspiration for those studying or hoping to study medicine.
