Key IPC Messages for General Practice (Influenza Surge 2025–26)

Influenza activity is at its peak and expected to remain high for several weeks, contributing to ongoing pressure on primary care and the wider health system.

Vaccination remains crucial for staff and eligible patients not yet vaccinated.

Core infection prevention and control (IPC) measures:

  • Promote hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette.
  • Ensure readily available alcohol-based hand rub and adequate mask supplies throughout the practice.

Use masks:

  • Masks are already recommended for staff caring for patients with respiratory symptoms.
  • During the current surge, all staff, patients and accompanying adults are encouraged to wear masks during this period of high influenza transmission
  • Advise people with respiratory symptoms not to visit practices or other healthcare settings unless essential. Administrative staff assistance in this, and in promoting mask use is greatly appreciated.
  • Practice nurses’ contribution is indispensable – including promoting vaccination and maintaining IPC standards.

Further detail is available in the attached memo from the Chief Clinical Officer.
