Statement Regarding The Conflict In The Gaza Strip And Lebanon And The Impact On Healthcare Professionals

The conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon continue to have an enormous impact and are ongoing humanitarian crises, with tens of thousands of people killed and injured.
The Irish College of GPs condemns the loss of life, the destruction of healthcare facilities and the specific targeting of healthcare professionals which are prohibited under international humanitarian law.

Hospitals and healthcare facilities must be protected so that clinical staff can provide care and comfort to the thousands of injured people who face a daily struggle to survive in deteriorating conditions.

We stand in solidarity with our clinical colleagues in these regions. We call on all parties to pursue a peaceful solution, to end violence in the region and to ensure essential humanitarian aid reaches those in need and without delay.

The College recognises that some of its members choose to avoid prescribing medicines from companies that profit from or support systems of apartheid, or that breach international law. The College supports our members in making that choice, provided that, in doing so, patient care is not compromised.
