Last week, the Irish College of GPs welcomed incoming GP trainees to the TEDI (Trainee Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) Conference in Athlone Hotel on 5 and 6 August 2026.
The two-day event supports trainees who completed their primary medical degree outside Ireland as they begin their GP training journey. It provides practical guidance, introduces the support available through the College, and creates opportunities for trainees to connect with others starting a similar path.
Providing practical information, encouraging peer connections and showcasing the supports available through the College, TEDI helps trainees feel prepared, supported and confident as they begin GP training in Ireland.
The programme included sessions on success factors in GP training, trainee wellbeing, cultural competence and communication skills.
Attendees had the opportunity to meet fellow trainees, hear from colleagues with experience of the Irish GP training system, and learn more about the resources available to them throughout their training.
Feedback from participants highlighted the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. One attendee shared that it was reassuring to know they were “not the only trainee starting this new experience”, while another said they “felt connected and heard”.
