Statement on Racism and Racist Attacks
In recent months, Ireland has seen a worrying increase in racist attacks. One of our GP members recently reported being racially assaulted to the Gardai.
We recognise that these recent incidents have engendered a sense of fear within the community, causing individuals and their families to feel unsafe in their work, and in their community.
As the representative body for General Practice in Ireland, the Irish College of GPs unequivocally condemns all incidents of racist assaults and abuse against members of the international community living in Ireland.
As a College, we are proud of our diversity, and we are dedicated to policies that support diversity, equality and inclusion. We do not tolerate racism of any kind, and we publicly denounce racism in all forms, whether against our own members, our healthcare workforce, or any members of the international community living in Ireland.
We offer the College’s resources and services to support colleagues affected by racism, and we stand in solidarity with all individuals affected by the events of recent weeks.
The vast majority of Irish people welcome and appreciate the enormous contribution international workers make in the delivery of healthcare services. As a modern and progressive European country, racism has no place here.
