About the Certificate in Addiction Management in Primary Care

This course builds on the learning from the Foundation Course and aims to provide participants with in-depth information on recent developments in diagnosis and management of addiction problems including alcohol, prescription drugs and illicit substances and the theoretical framework to assess, manage and refer appropriately patients who misuse substances.

Participants of this course will obtain a clear understanding of:

  • common assessment tools used in addiction
  • evidence based interventions
  • common referral and rehabilitation pathways

Many of the skills acquired on this course (including communication and counselling skills) are applicable across a range of medical problems which may present in a range of clinical settings.

Who Is This Course Suitable for?

All GPs who have completed the Irish College of GPs' Addiction Management in Primary Care Foundation Course are eligible to register for this course.

This course is also the education component for becoming a recognised Level 2 OST Prescriber with the HSE.

Course Duration

The course will commence on Wednesday, 13 November 2024 and run until January 2025. Participants are expected to attend two online live workshops (dates below), complete 7 online learning modules and submit a Practice Improvement Project, demonstrating their learning during the course. 

Live workshops will be held on the following dates:

  • Wednesday, 13 November 9am – 1pm
  • Wednesday, 11 December 9am – 1pm
